You should exercise on an empty stomach to boost your metabolism, lose weight & promote lean muscle growth.

The easiest advice for anyone to lose weight and get fit is to exercise regularly. But how much and when you should exercise, are also an important matter that should be kept in mind.

We know that exercise is good and exercising in the morning can really help. But do you know that exercising on an empty stomach is best? We haven’t done so far.

You are often recommended to have a quick high-energy breakfast that acts as a stimulating mechanism. In fact, there has always been a debate about what we should eat before a workout.

But a group of researchers from the University of Bath in the UK has finally put this debate to rest. According to them, you should exercise on the empty stomach to boost your metabolism and to reduce your weight. It is also popular as ‘fasted cardio‘ and it is believed to help you burn more fat.

For this study, researchers have analyzed the effect of eating versus fasting on the gene expression in the adipose (fat) tissue. And finally, claims that it is better to exercise on an empty stomach to lose weight.

You should exercise on an empty stomach to boost your metabolism, lose weight & promote lean muscle growth.

The researchers explain that after you eat, your adipose tissue gets engages in response to that food and cannot produce the same beneficial effect during exercise.

In order to prove their findings, study participants comprised of a group of overweight men. They were asked to walk for 60 minutes at 60 percent maximum oxygen consumption on an empty stomach and, on another occasion, two hours after consuming a high-calorie carbohydrate-rich breakfast.

After eating or fasting and after exercising, many blood samples were collected. They also collected fatty tissues samples immediately before and after an hour of walking.

After analyzing, it was revealed that expression of a gene in adipose tissue was very different in two tests. It was found that expression of the two genes, PDK4 and HSL increased when men performed fasting and exercise and decreased when they had eaten before exercising.

An increase in PDK4 indicates that the stored fat is used for metabolism instead of carbohydrates, and hence, it can help to promote additional weight loss.

Many health and fitness experts also advise that you should exercise on the empty stomach because you are able to give large quantities of oxygen to your muscles and thus, burning potentially more fat. It can also trigger a cascade of hormonal changes throughout the body, which is amazingly suitable for building muscle and losing fat.

Exercise, especially intensive exercise that uses a lot of muscles (compound movements like deadlifts and squats) causes a major increase in testosterone – this is the reason why it is a good idea to exercise while fasting.

Many studies have shown that training in fasting states is a great way to create lean muscle mass and promote insulin sensitivity, not only due to nifty hormonal reactions but also to absorb post-workout food /drink more efficiently.

In short, the fasting training helps ensure that the carbs, proteins, and fats go to their right place in the body and stored only minimally as body fat.

Exercise on the empty stomach has been shown to be particularly great for fat loss. And it has also been shown that those who trained while fasting becomes progressively better at burning extra fat at higher levels of intensity (probably because of an increase in fat-oxidizing enzymes).
